Bill Mahoney, DMin, LMFT
Psychotherapist – Telepsych
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I currently work with adults of all ages—18 years and older. I provide individual, couples, and family therapy.
I’ve provided therapy to children, adolescents, and adults of all ages in offices, schools, and homes since 2008. I’ve had experience working with a broad range of diagnoses and problems including mood disorders, depression, anxiety, panic, agoraphobia, trauma, stress, adjustment problems (e.g, singleness, dating, loneliness, isolation, career challenges, unemployment, divorce, empty-nesters, retirement, health problems, etc.) substance abuse, marital problems, relationship challenges, and parenting issues and challenges.
My training and perspective is “systems-oriented”—meaning, the lens I see my clients through includes how significant relationships, and past or present living situations, have impacted their lives whether positively or negatively. My primary approach is cognitive-behavioral therapy with a view to the larger context in which people live.
I believe some mental health problems are not only caused by losses, health problems, trauma, or biological or developmental problems—but at times by the natural challenges of the ever-changing “family life cycle” (e.g., from dating, to marriage/intimate partnership, to the birth of the first child, to families with adolescents, to launching young adults, to empty-nesters, etc.). People often seek help at one of the critical ‘transitional times” of the natural family life-cycle.
I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible from Gordon College, Wenham, MA. I’ve taken graduate courses at Boston University School of Theology and received my Master of Divinity degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, S. Hamilton, MA. I received my Doctor of Ministry in Marriage & Family Studies degree from Bethel Theological Seminary/University, St. Paul, MN. I’ve taken graduate courses in psychology and counseling at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh; a graduate course in ethics, and supervision during my clinical practicum for licensing as an LMFT at Bethel University; and graduate courses in marriage & family therapy through Touro University Worldwide.
My work as a therapist is a “second career”. I previously served evangelical, Christian churches as a pastor for fifteen years. I’ve also worked as an affiliate-faculty college professor teaching online courses in biblical studies and psychology.
