Sophia Nazzaro, LMFT

Psychotherapist – Andover, MA

Sophia Nazzaro is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) with a range of experience specializing in relational and individual therapy with older teens, adults, and couples. As a systems therapist, she seeks to help clients explore patterns of interaction in their relationships, develop skills for increasing confidence and peace of mind, and learn effective methods of making decisions and solving problems.

Valuing the importance of the relationship between therapist and client, Sophia initiates an authentic, open, and collaborative experience where therapist and client work together to create change. Along with clinical expertise, she aims to bring intuition, empathy, levity, humor, and respect into each session.

Sophia works to shed light on how issues, including depression and anxiety, tend to develop in response to the complexities of our lives, such as relationships with family and friends, the impact of societal expectations, and the challenges that can accompany life transitions. She explores how aspects such as familial expectations, gender, religion, sexuality, race, and culture impact the way clients experience the world, and how we understand and participate in relationships.

Sophia uses a variety of therapeutic techniques, including Family Systems Theories, Attachment Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Gottman’s Couple Therapy Techniques, depending on the need of each individual or couple.

Education and Experience:

Sophia received her Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Massachusetts Boston after obtaining a BA in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Having worked as a life management coach for The Asperger/Autism Network, she specialized in helping adults on the spectrum overcome particular barriers for improving their quality of life. There she gained a systemic perspective regarding the impact of various systems, particularly the family system, on an individual’s mental wellness. She has worked extensively for over six years with diverse communities, including couples, families, and individuals. She has assisted clients as they navigate stress that accompanies major life changes, identity issues, relational discord, communication patterns, divorces/co-parenting, and beyond.
