Athena Zazzaro is Licensed Professional Counselor Associate. She completed her Bachelors of Science in Psychology at Mitchel College in New London, CT. In addition she completed her Master of Arts in Art Therapy and Counseling. Athena is a registered Art Therapist (ATR Credential) by the Art Therapy Association of America. Art Therapy is available to clients who would like to express themselves through the creative process, alongside traditional talk therapy techniques.
Athena utilizes a client centered approach with individualized treatment plans. She uses evidence based practices including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), coping skills, mindfulness training, and Family Systems Theories. Athena works with adults, couples, and teenagers, specializing in Art Therapy, communication, grief symptoms, trauma, life changes, mood dysregulation, chronic illness, anxiety, and depression.
Prior to coming to Family Counseling Associates, Athena worked at the West Haven Veterans Hospital as an Art Therapist, and then transitioned to United Community and Family Services (UCFS) in Norwich, CT, working as an outpatient Clinician. Athena believes the stronger the connection between the mind and body, the more understanding there is between thoughts, feelings, and ones actions.
